Updated on 06/29/2024

A graduate of Central Michigan University, Jean excelled as an athlete both running and playing basketball for the Chippewas. She was hired at Clio High School as a Physical Education and Health teacher in 1976. Jean made a huge impact both in and out of the classroom during her time at Clio. She coached tennis, swimming, cross country, and girls golf during her tenure, taking both the girls cross country and girls golf teams to unprecedented heights under her watch. Jean led the 1980 Girls Cross Country team to a MHSAA State Runner-up finish. Jean made the transition to the links and oversaw one of the most incredible runs by any Girls Golf program in state history. Beginning in 1995, the Mustangs finished as the MHSAA State Runner-up for an incredible six straight years. After retiring from teaching and coaching in 2001, Jean was inducted into the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. Though we lost Jean in the spring of 2016, her legacy lives on as a pioneer for women’s sports both in the Clio community and the entire state of Michigan. Clio Area Schools is honored to have Jean Holbert as a Class of 2024 Clio Area Schools Hall of Fame Inductee.
